Tears: Long head of biceps

Patient Positioning

Patient seated on a revolving stool, arm in slight internal rotation. Elbow flexed (90°), palm up.

Probe Positioning

Place the probe over the long biceps tendon between the greater and lesser tuberosities in its short axis. Shift the probe up to the intraarticular course of the long head of biceps and down to the myotendinous junction (level of the humeral insertion of the pectoralis major tendon).

note: due to the tear of the tendon, the muscle belly shows signs of atrophy (hyperechoic increase of the cross sectional area)

note: the long head of biceps cannot be visualized in the bicipital groove

Note: scan the biceps muscle and its myotendinous junction in longitudinal and transverse planes to detect the changings of the muscle`s texture at the level of the tear
