Patient Positioning

Patient lies prone, leg in extended position. You may put a small pillow under the ankle.

Probe Positioning

Place the transducer on a transverse plane over the lateral aspect of the dorsal joint.

Note: In the popliteal fossa lateral to the medial head of grastrocnemius the neurovascular bundle (popliteal artery and vein, tibial nerve) is located. The vein is compressible in contrast to the artery. Lifting the foot will fill the popliteal vein to demonstrate it better. More lateral to the lateral head of gastrocnemius the biceps femoris tendon can be inspected and followed upwards.
