Iliopsoas bursitis

Patient Positioning

Patient supine, leg may be in slight external rotation.

Probe Positioning

Place the transducer on almost transverse planes over the femoral head. Lower ultrasonic frequencies may be necessary.

Note: the iliopsoas bursa (or iliopectineal bursa) is located between the iliopsoas tendon and the anterior capsule of the hip joint and in normal states not detectable. TFlanking this bursa are the femoral artery, veins and nerve.

This patient suffers from leg edema because of prominent iliopsoas bursitis. Flanking this bursa are the femoral artery, veins and nerve. The yello line shows the way of the needle during puncture.
