Median nerve distal to proximal

Patient Positioning

Patient seated in front of the examiner, hand palm up resting on a examination table.

Probe Positioning

Place the transducer on a transverse plane over the proximal carpal tunnel - bony landmarks are: the pisiform ulnar and the scaphoid tubercle radial. After detection of the median nerve in transverse planes, follow the nerv up to the brachial artery

After detection of the median nerve at the level of the carpal tunnel, follow it proximally. In the forearm, the nerve travels between the flexor digitorum profundus and flexor digitorum superficialis muscles. Then it leaves the forearm between the pronator teres and biceps tendon and runs with the brachial artery (medial at the elbow, lateral in the upper arm).
