Calcific tendonitis of the tibialis posterior tendon at the navicular attachment

Patient Positioning

Patient lies supine with a small pillow under the dorsal aspect of the ankle or legs in "frog-like" position. The ankle is lying on its lateral aspect.

Probe Positioning

Place the transducer with its anterior part over dorsal aspect of medial malleolus. Dorsal to it, the flexor tendons  can be seen.

note: Calcific tendinosis (tendonosis/tendonitis) is a condition which results from the deposition of calcium hydroxyapatite crystals in any tendon of the body. This patient suffers from an acute inflammation of calcifications at the insertion of the tibialis posterior tendon. Common is the presence of an accessory navicular bone (os navicularum or os tibiale externum). This is an extra bone or piece of cartilage which is incorporated within the posterior tibial tendon, and can give almost identical symptoms to calcific tendinosis of the posterior tibialis tendon.
